Roselyn Cloake - Singing a the Timaru Sound Shell Festival of Rose's 2007

The story so far

Roselyn Cloake is a passionate singer, with a voice that touches your soul, she sings jazz, roots, and rhythm. Inspired by Sarah McLauchlan, Madeleine Peyroux and Norah Jones, she is now working on her solo project singing her own music and the well known tracks of all those that have influenced her. Creating a sound that eases your mind she lays you back with her somber tones, while you nod and smile softly.

Growing up in Timaru in the eighties would rank as Roselyn's first achievement. No small feat when you live in a family of giants, Roselyn went on to become her own giant, a bundle of talent wrapped in some very tall skin. Some Kiwi, some Dutch, some family talent, some determination, a flair for art, all merge to make Roselyn the smart performer that audiences are starting to swing to, as she maps out her path to musical independence.

Roselyn learnt how to play the piano by sitting on her father’s knee. At the age of seven she attended Yamaha Keyboard lessons. Although she only was part of the class for two years she feels that this strongly developed her love of music and the challenge of playing by ear. School years were her breeding ground - orchestra, chorale, vocal training, and instrument lessons that gave an early sign: this girl was headed for the spotlight.

"I like the idea of being the wallpaper of the room, not the art. I perform to create an atmosphere at weddings, corporate dinners and functions, where there is space for people to chat and enjoy their company... let the creative juices flow..."

Roselyn is a singer of soul, with soul. She sings jazz, through to roots. Inspired by Sarah McLauchlan, Madeleine Peyroux and Norah Jones, she sings her own music too. Roselyn describes her music as quiet, laid back, even sombre. Her fans just describe it as cool.

Roselyn has her map, and she knows where she is going. She has worked with a range of local musicians and bands on varying projects from Loretta Jones to Big Picnic and Mark Vanilau. Her most memorable work is that with the late Rangi Gillespie. She is now working on her solo project singing her own music and the well known tracks of all those that have influenced her. Having success with performing for corporate and community events.

"There is a real buzz watching an audience try to figure out why a song is familiar - most of the time they are not used to hearing a song like Creep from Radiohead, or Heartbreak Hotel from Elvis arranged to suit jazz, I like bringing something new to something familiar"

You can find Roselyn at the TGB (The Grosvenor Bar) often on a Friday evening entertaining the punters... view her gig guide
